God Gathers Us

Call to Worship - Psalm 2:1-12

To be read aloud by someone in your home:

1 Why do the nations conspire
    and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
    against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break their chains
    and throw off their shackles.”

4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
    the Lord scoffs at them.
5 He rebukes them in his anger
    and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
6 “I have installed my king
    on Zion, my holy mountain.”

7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

He said to me, “You are my son;
    today I have become your father.
8 Ask me,
    and I will make the nations your inheritance,
    the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron;
    you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;
    be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear
    and celebrate his rule with trembling.
12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry
    and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
    Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Opening Prayer

  • This is one of the Psalms you’ve already read (months ago!) if you are reading through the bible in a year with us.

  • Psalm 2 is one of the earliest main psalms that the Apostles in the earliest days of their preaching recognized as a psalm that spoke about Jesus. (It is very likely that Jesus Himself made this connection for them! See Luke 24:44-49)

  • As we move through this season of Lent, toward our celebration of Holy Week and Easter Sunday, this psalm speaks directly to the opposition Jesus faced, the rejection he endured as God’s King, and His ultimate victory through the cross and resurrection.

  • As we think of all Jesus endured, and all the chaos and opposition that swirled around Him - and yet the certainty even then that darkness could not triumph - we know that we can also trust God with the chaos and struggle in our lives.

  • Take a moment to think about the difficult situations that you are facing. Think about others in the church family, in your family or neighborhood or workplace, who are struggling in the midst of chaos and difficulty and darkness.

  • Then, go to God in prayer, lifting up your needs, and praying for the rest of our church family, and giving thanks to God that He is Lord and has triumphed in His Son Jesus Christ.

Congregational Singing

  • We encourage you to sing - make a joyful noise! If you play an instrument, play! If you have some favorite hymns or choruses, pick one or two and sing! Or make use of other technology to play some music, and listen and sing along.

  • Below are some hymns you can make use of if these would be a help to you.
