God Gathers Us
Call to Worship - Psalm 2:1-9
To be read aloud by someone in your home:
1 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Opening Prayer
We’ve been reflecting the past few weeks on the glory of God, displayed in creation - which is what the psalmist is doing in this psalm, as well. Reflecting on the size, scope, and glory of the heavens, the psalmist wonders aloud why God would pay any attention to us.
And yet, thinking back to the creation of everything described in Genesis 1 and 2, he remembers that God has given humanity a special place in creation, as those made in God’s very image and likeness and called to rule and steward God’s creation.
God does, in fact, pay attention to us, and He is, in fact, concerned with us. And as one scholar has put it, according to the bible, the wrong conclusion to draw from seeing the eternal vastness of God would be to conclude He’s too big to care about us. The right conclusion, is that He is too great to fail.
Go to God in prayer, thanking Him for who He is and all He has done for you.
