God Gathers Us

Call to Worship - Psalm 16

To be read aloud by someone in your home:

Keep me safe, my God,
    for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    apart from you I have no good thing.”
I say of the holy people who are in the land,
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names on my lips.

Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
    you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
    even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
You make known to me the path of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,
    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Opening Prayer

  • This is one of the Psalms you read this week if you are reading through the bible in a year with us. For several weeks we’ve been taking one of those Psalms and reading it again as we begin worship.

  • As you read this Psalm, notice how it is full of expressions of gratitude. Take a moment to read over the Psalm again and make note of what David thanks God for. Then take a few more minutes to make your own list (though feel free to barrow from David’s of course!).

  • Ultimately, Acts 2:24-36 teaches us that we should see in this Psalm our Lord Jesus, who has descended to the “realm of the dead”, but now is risen and ascended to the right hand of God. Seen in this light, we remember that it is ultimately Jesus who is for us the Way of life; Jesus who fills us with joy in God’s presence.

  • So as you come into worship, take a few minutes to give thanks to the Lord for His kindness to you and for the salvation He has given us in Jesus.

Congregational Singing

  • We encourage you to sing - make a joyful noise! If you play an instrument, play! If you have some favorite hymns or choruses, pick one or two and sing! Or make use of other technology to play some music, and listen and sing along.

  • Below are some hymns you can make use of if these would be a help to you.

Offering

During this time when we can't gather on Sundays, we can still receive your offerings a couple of ways:

  • You can drop your offering in the locked mailbox outside the church office entrance

  • Or, you can mail them to the church at 393 Water Street, Augusta ME 04330.

Thank you for your continued support of Penney and its ministries!
